A game has an arena, a set of rules and targets, parameters that players can improvise within. The six paintings in this room, a series titled False Start, were made over several years, layering gestures and decisions over time. Just as a game lays out its constraints, these paintings were made with initial decisions and rules; particular materials, colours of red and blue, shallow depth like drawings under a curling ice sheet. Once the parameters had been decided, the making of the paintings allowed chance, improvisation and accident.
Ailsa Craig, 2024, Film, 14 min
Taking us on the journey of the hardest granite in the world, this film moves from footage of a youth curling championship in Dumfries, through a curling stone manufacturer in Mauchline, to the rocky granite isle of Ailsa Craig and back again.
Ailsa Craig is a meditative work that contemplates the elusive notion of a target, whilst lingering on themes of teamwork, competition, craftsmanship, care and landscape.
This film was made in Scotland in 2024.
